Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional disturbance of the gastrointestinal system (GIT) that results in abdominal discomfort such as pain, cramping and bloating. IBS may also be dominated by episodes of either diarrhoea or constipation. It is an uncomfortable and often frustrating condition where a direct cause to a person’s symptoms are not always known or obvious. The aetiology of IBS is often multifaceted and contributing factors can include a disturbance to the GIT microbiome, food intolerances, gastrointestinal hyper-permeability, low-grade inflammation and altered motility to the GIT. The Brain-Gut connection is also becoming ever increasingly understood and it is now widely recognized that the influence of emotional states such as stress, depression and anxiety can have on the gastro-intestinal system.
A Naturopathic practitioner will thoroughly investigate the underlying contributing factors that are causing the patients IBS symptoms. From this information they will formulate are very individualised and specific treatment plan.
